Renewing My Vows

July 31st, 2011 by judytalks

While on vacation recently, I took time to reevaluate my personal and business goals, the vows I made to myself about writing, grief support, and tending to a business. Though I see growth and success in general, I had to admit that some sustainable areas were wearing thin. Not enough attention to the parts I like the least.

One important element of success is tedium. Some things just have to be done every day, consistently, no whining, no procrastination . A prime example occurred while I was raising a family.

I returned to college in my early forties, telling everyone I was going to go to school until I got my degree or my medicare card-whichever came first. Years later, I have both. It was one of the highlights of my life, a time I cherish, but it was also one of the most difficult endeavors because I had four children at home and a husband with a chronic illness. It took much longer than I thought and was hampered by important responsibilities. I realized I just had to keep putting one foot in front of the other until I fulfilled my promise to myself.

What if I had dumped it? Caved in to the comments from friends “Are you STILL taking classes? What are you thinking?

My thinking was that if I reneged on my vow to myself, I would lose my self respect and the opportunity to fulfill my own dreams. And there it is. If you jeopardize your relationship to yourself, you’ll feel lost until you reclaim it. It’s said that life isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. How true.

I’m renewing my vows to myself to do what I love to do, and maintain the daily grind that’s required for a measure of success.
